The Lower East Side was the first stop for generations of immigrants — Jews, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Chinese — whose tenement buildings still line the narrow streets. Today the LES is one of NYC's hottest neighborhoods for nightlife, with Ludlow and Orchard Streets packed with bars, clubs, and late-night eateries. Essex Market recently moved into a sleek new building and remains a food lover's destination. The Tenement Museum tells the neighborhood's immigrant story, while street art and galleries reflect its current creative energy. New luxury high-rises have sprouted along the waterfront, but walk-up apartments in old tenements still offer some of downtown's more affordable rents. The F train at Delancey and the J/M/Z at Essex provide transit access.
