About East Village

The East Village is Manhattan's longtime center of counterculture, from the punk rock scene of the 1970s to today's eclectic mix of dive bars, ramen shops, and vintage stores. The neighborhood stretches from 14th Street down to Houston, bounded by Broadway and the East River. Unlike its more polished West Village neighbor, the East Village retains a gritty, artistic edge that draws creative types and young professionals. Alphabet City (Avenues A, B, C, D) on the eastern side has transformed from rough to hip, with community gardens, craft cocktail bars, and some of the city's best tacos. St. Marks Place remains the neighborhood's commercial heart, though it's evolved from punk hangout to a mix of Japanese eateries and quirky shops. The L train at 1st and 3rd Avenues connects to Williamsburg; the 6 train runs along Astor Place.
